Freya Saleh is an abstract artist exploring the ‘realm of the invisible’ through the study of essence and shadow. She characterises her work as being about ‘the phenomena of reading shadows, in the same way as one would read tea leaves, a palm or reflections on the surface of water.’
Much of her work is fuelled by ideas found in literature and poetry from the 1800s, in particular the Gothic genre. Saleh works deeply with an ochre based palette of reds, browns and golden yellows, as these are the pigments that unlock her visions.
Saleh’s practise began with the study of realism and figurative drawing, in 2022, after relocating to Spain, she decided to move towards an abstract expression of her ideas, but to carry the lessons of drawing with her and to form the foundations of her technique.
Freya Saleh has exhibited her artwork in prestigious venues and participated in noteworthy exhibitions that have further solidified her reputation as an emerging artist. Notable among her exhibitions are Christie’s: Picasso, a 50 year legacy, in addition to the Student Exhibition at The Royal Society of British Artists, Mall Galleries, both in London, UK. She also actively contributed to “Ernest Gimson: Observation, Imagination & Making” and “FAKE” at The Wilson Art Gallery & Museum, Cheltenham, in 2018 and 2019 respectively.
